"on a technical level, this laptop is sound. the screen is enormous, colorful, and sharp. 3GB of ram and 200GB hd (even at 4200rpm) is absurd in this price range. 104-key keyboard makes office-ish work much easier to handle. the core 2 duo processor is neckbreakingly fast. there's even factory-pressed restore discs in the box!
that's not to say that there aren't a few issues, however. the volume control is a rotary encoder, rather than an actual knob, meaning it rotates endlessly and you're relying on windows letting you know what your volume is instead of a tactile response. the lack of rear mounted ports (vga, usb, power) is sort of bizarre; it's awful to have a usb mouse plugged in on the side and constantly fight with the cord. the sreen being 17.1" should have probably been 1920x1200, not 1440x900, but this IS a high-end BUDGET laptop. the shared memory on the video chipset is unfortunate but logical, it runs vista's aero glass perfectly fine so far. just don't try gaming on it.
on a performance standpoint, it's outrageous. i write digital music, and this laptop lets me throw more instruments and effects into my rack than i'd ever thought possible. it plays tracks that made my old laptop outright crash, tracks with 2GB drum sample kits, tracks with 100+ high-quality reverbs and equalizers, and it can export it all at 24bit/192k.
in essence, i believe i've stumbled upon a hidden goldmine; it's a cheap, INCREDIBLY capable, highly portable soft-studio, as long as you already have a usb-to-midi converter of some form.
now if i could just find all the proper drivers to install windows xp on this..."

"It's amazing how fast things things change. Compared to the laptop I bought three years ago, this laptop is faster, with a far larger screen, much more memory, and a way bigger hard drive. And 1/3 CHEAPER. The only disappointment is really poor battery life. Two hours is deplorable. Still, it's a heck of a machine, for the price."

"EXCELLENT MACHINE! POWERS THROUGH PROGRAMS! LOADS OFFICE 07 AND PROJECT FAST! ONLY DRAWBACK:not an invidia or ATI chipset, which limits gaming options.. other than that, a well-rounded system with plenty of resources"
